Our Physics & Optical Engineering program is at the leading edge of photonics and is THE place for students interested in light-based technologies such as fiber optics, spy satellite technology, optical computing, and silicon photonics.
Jump light years ahead
As a major in Physics, NanoEngineering, or Optical Engineering, you'll receive unparalleled opportunities. The NanoEngineering students work in our state-of-the-art MiNDS lab – which is usually reserved for graduate-level students at other institutions – starting year one, eventually working on semiconductor devices fabrication and testing.
The Optical Engineering students can boast to be holders of one of the nation's first Optical Engineering degrees; we were training optical engineers before anyone knew we needed them. We prepare our students in a variety of specialized fields, including laser systems, fiber optics, imaging and image processing, and silicon photonics.
The Physics major specifically requires students to participate in multiple one-on-one directed study opportunities throughout their years at Rose – including access to our Oakley Observatory, one of the finest undergrad observatories in the country – allowing them to get unique hands-on experiences and preparing them for a variety of careers after college.
