At Rose-Hulman, you’ll have the opportunity to put your knowledge to the test in our Unit Operations Laboratory and High Bay Lab, where you’ll work closely with faculty mentors.

Food Science Lab

Students are able to address important societal issues related to food production and distribution, sustainability and nutrition, as well as explore the scientific principals and engineering techniques used to create our favorite products like coffee, chocolate and more.

High Bay & Unit Operations Lab

More than 20 different experimental modules are available for unit operations lab projects here, including distillation, gas absorption, liquid extraction, drying, filtration, microfiltration, and membrane separations.

Research Opportunities

Our faculty researchers combine years of industry experience with undergraduate research opportunities. Meet some of our faculty and learn more about their areas of expertise and current projects below.

Kimberly H. Henthorn

Dr. Henthorn’s research involves the characterization of transitional bubble and liquid profiles during bubble breakup periods, and may also include investigation into the effect of fluid rheology on pressure drop profiles in these systems.

Dr. Adam Nolte

Dr. Nolte’s research is currently focused on how processing affects the chemical and physical properties of coffee and chocolate.  This includes factors such as acidity, caffeine content, and viscosity of the finished products.

Dr. NReizman

Dr. Irene Reizman

Dr. Reizman’s research focuses on biochemical engineering and biotechnology, with current work investigating the use of biosensors in industrial fermentation. Her research explores how oxygen-sensitive promoters can help cells respond to oxygen limitations in large-scale bioreactors and reduce the formation of unwanted byproducts.

Dr. Kimberly Henthorn

Dr. Kimberly Henthorn

A member of the Rose-Hulman faculty since 2010, Dr. Kim Henthorn specializes in particle technology and two-phase microfluidic systems. As head of Chemical Engineering, Dr. Henthorn is currently conducting research with students on the science and engineering of chocolate production and has worked with fellow faculty members to introduce new experiments into the chemical engineering laboratory. The Rose-Hulman alumna has gained industry experience by working for Dow Chemical, Reilly Industries, and Pfizer, and serving as a consultant for Mo-Sci Corporation, Brewer Science, and DuPont.
