Laptop Requirements

Incoming students are required to purchase an institute-selected laptop directly from Rose‑Hulman. We do this to ensure your hardware and software needs are covered so you can focus on the important stuff.

The 2026-2027 first-year class will be using the Dell Pro Max 16:

What if I already have another model or brand of laptop computer?

Purchase requirements

You are required to purchase the specified laptop computer directly from Rose-Hulman. This is necessary to ensure that you have a computer that can be serviced by the institute, and is compatible with the campus network that delivers service to classrooms, laboratories and residence hall rooms. Other units may not satisfy these requirements. The required laptop computer gives you network capability and the ability to run the software that you will need in your academic classes. The large variety of laptops on the market makes it impossible for Rose-Hulman to provide maintenance service or assistance to you with a laptop other than the required model. For these reasons, other laptop computers will not satisfy the laptop computer requirement.

Can I use the required laptop and software throughout my undergraduate career at Rose-Hulman?

The committee that selected the laptop computer and the software suite that is pre-loaded on it was careful to ensure that you can. While the rapid evolution of computer technology guarantees that more advanced units will be available before you graduate, your unit will be powerful enough for most of your classroom work throughout your career at Rose-Hulman. The available software will be usable in upper level as well as entry-level course work.

Do I need a printer?

You need not own a printer since printers are located near classrooms, in residence halls, in the library and in computer labs. You may wish to buy a printer for your convenience; however, Rose-Hulman does not support personal printers.

How do I pay for my laptop?

Deposited students receive an email notification in June indicating it is time to purchase the laptop along with payment instructions.

When is my laptop payment due?

The laptop must be paid in full before arriving on campus. Laptops are not released to the student until the full payment is received.
